The iOS 18 update was made available to all users on September 16. Alongside the upcoming release of Apple Intelligence, some of the standout features include the ability to personalize icons on the Home Screen, change app shortcuts on the Lock Screen, a revamped Control Center, RCS support, and the introduction of the Passwords app.
In addition to these major changes, there are several smaller, fun features that could prove useful.
Settings
The Settings app is now less cluttered, as Apple has added a dedicated Apps menu for easier access to individual app settings, reducing the need for scrolling.
Photos
In the Photos app, users can now filter out screenshots by selecting the sorting icon and adjusting “View Options.” The Utilities section now includes new categories like documents, receipts, and illustrations, making it easier to find specific content. Additionally, Photos suggests potential wallpaper images and allows you to copy edits like aspect ratio, exposure, and white balance from one photo to another. The app now automatically organizes travel photos into a Trips section and groups images by both people and pets. A new feature for video editing includes speed controls to create slow-motion effects.
Camera
iOS 18 has solved a common complaint by allowing music to continue playing while taking photos or videos via Bluetooth. The Camera app also introduces a 5-second timer alongside the existing 3- and 10-second options.
Control Center
In iOS 18, the Control Center can be customized with widgets and buttons. A major improvement is the addition of a power button in the top-right corner, enabling users to turn off the device directly from the Control Center without using physical buttons.
Messages
Messages now offer the option to schedule texts for later, though the feature is somewhat hidden in the + menu. Users can also send full-resolution images up to 100MB, and Text Effects bring animated visuals like Explode or Ripple to conversations, along with formatting options like bold and italics. When without a signal, users can send messages via satellite. The Tapback feature has been expanded to support any emoji or sticker, and multiple Tapbacks are displayed more clearly.
Safari
Safari now includes a tool to remove unnecessary elements from a webpage, though ads remain. The browser also provides article summaries and highlights additional details about people, music, and entertainment.
Weather
The Weather app features a new widget that merges the “Feels Like” temperature with the actual temperature for easy comparison. Wind conditions are also more prominently displayed, and users can set Home and Work locations directly from contacts.
Siri
With iOS 18, AirPods users can respond to Siri by shaking or nodding their heads, allowing for hands-free call management.
Podcasts
The Podcasts app now lets users jump to specific chapters via the progress bar, reorder or remove episodes in their queue, and share particular moments using a transcript feature.
