Middle and high school students can be both the easiest and hardest audience to engage. If you're creating a cool new video game, they'll likely download it immediately. However, if you’re pitching an educational app like Revyze, it can be a tougher sell.
Despite the challenge, the French startup Revyze has managed to gain one million users over two years. In June, it even reached the #1 spot for free downloads in Apple’s App Store.
A significant number of French 9th graders used Revyze to prepare for their national exams, and the app has hosted 40,000 videos and quizzes from around 2,000 content creators, racking up 150 million views.
This momentum has bolstered Revyze's fundraising efforts. On Monday, the company announced a €5.5 million ($6 million) seed round led by Speedinvest and Moonfire. Other investors include Motier Ventures, Station F, Supercell co-founder Illka Paananen, King co-founders Riccardo Zacconni and Sebastian Knusson, and Duolingo’s Nickey Skarstad. This followed a €2 million pre-seed round in 2022.
Outside of France, Revyze's U.S. expansion hasn’t been as smooth. Originally pitched as the "TikTok of education," the team hoped to tap into the U.S. market by helping students prepare for major exams like the SAT. However, they found that engagement outside exam season was low, and users didn't consistently return to the app.
This led Revyze to revamp its product for more consistent use. The app now offers “capsules,” which combine videos, quizzes, and summaries on specific topics, designed to be completed in a structured way, similar to Duolingo’s lessons. These capsules can also be monetized by creators, allowing top content creators to earn a share of in-app rewards.
While the app remains free for now, Revyze plans to introduce paid features in the future, such as personalized analytics and quicker access to content. For now, the focus is on growing its user base and nurturing a diverse community of content creators, including both motivated students and teachers.
